Islam: Call to Prayer

During my journeys through the various religious forms of worship, I had the privilege to practice Salat, or the Prayers of the Prophets.  In fact, I still use the postures in my personal religious practice. One of the most beautiful parts of Salat is the Call to Prayer. While having a public call to prayer is not unique to Islam, it is the only one that uses the human voice as far as I know. This is also the most well know part of the prayer  by people in the West. It’s in movies and T.V shows all the time. What is not so well known is what is actually being said, so hear it is: Translation below video.

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar

God is Great, Greater than our greatest conception.

Ash hadu an la liaha illa Llah, Ash hadu an la ilaha illa Llah

I bear witness that there is no God but God.

Ashadu annan Muhammadan rasulullah,
Ashadu annan Muhammadan rasulullah

I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God.

Hayya alal Salah, Hayya alal Sala

Come to prayer

Hayya alal Falah, Hayya alal Falah

Come to compleation

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar

God is great, God is great

La illaha illa Llah

There is no God but God.
